Description

This very large old bucket (oke) is made of tight-fitting wooden slats held which are bound together with woven strips of bamboo.  The bucket features Japanese writing carved into the wood.  The writing is difficult to read though we could make out the words ‘Mewoto‘ and ‘Hiratani‘ which may be names.  We are not sure of the function of this bucket which includes a curious rope-like plug at the base.  The bucket dates from the early to mid 20th century and is in fair to good condition with marks and scratches from handling and a darkened patina of age.  The bamboo strap has a broken section which sticks out and for this reason the bucket should be handled with care in order to avoid causing further damage.
