Description

Hand-carved wooden Japanese Brown Bear figure.  Though bears (kuma) are found on many Japanese islands, Brown Bears (higuma) are limited mainly to the northern island of Hokkaido where they have played an important role in the spiritual life of the indigenous Ainu people.  Japanese brown bears are up to three times larger than Asiatic bears and prefer colder climates and more remote habitats.

About the Listed Item

This large statue depicts the bear carrying a salmon over his back and is in good condition with no cracks and a light patina of age.  This authentic higuma bear statue is less than 40 years old and was acquired in the historic city of Shizuoka, Japan near the foot of Mt. Fuji.
