Description

Old Japanese spinning top (koma).  When I showed a similar top to my Japanese father-in-law (mid 70s) his face lit up as he began telling me how as a boy he and his friends would play with various types of tops on the street in front of their home (rural farming community without much car traffic).  Tops such as this are “thrown” after a long string is wound around the body.

About the Listed Item

The old Japanese spinning top offered here is in fair condition though the wooden body of the top is quite darkened from age with dents, scratches and wear from past use.  This top dates from the early to mid Japanese Showa period (1926-1989) and does not include a throwing string though the top does include an interesting wooden display base.  We have never seen such a base included with tops like this before and therefore we are not sure that the base is an original accessory.

Size:
Height (excluding display base): 5.1 inches (13.0 centimeters)
Diameter: 3.1 inches (8.0 centimeters)
Weight: 9.9 ounces (282 grams)
